We use many metaphors around cancer, often concerning fighting, war, and survival. I liked to use metaphors about adventure, finding myself in strange territories that I did not know. Then came the idea of “patch” and of course, it could only be a pirate’s patch … Anne Bonny was one of the few pirate women legends and lived her life according to her own rules.

A few days ago we had the opportunity to chat with Noelia Morales, creator of Anna Bonny, about the asymmetry, self-esteem and society’s negative comments towards women. The still existing taboos of cancer. You will now read a story of self-overcoming culminating in an extraordinary project. Discover this pirate!

Anna Bonny: Hello Noelia, tell us, how does Anna Bonny emerge?

Anna Bonny is born from a personal story. After a radical mastectomy, I went looking for some lingerie that would still say something about the woman I was. I had not lost my desire to flirt or decorate my body or my sense of humor. I did not find anything that fulfilled my needs so I decided to do it myself. Anna Bonny was born with the sole intention of sharing the discovery.

The name of the project references a historical pirate woman. What is it that convinced you of that character?

Anna Bonny is the claim that there are alternatives to breast reconstruction, what do you think Anna Bonny’s project can contribute to women who come across with the brand?

I would say that it can bring a little “lightness”. Living with one breast is not that terrible. And that sometimes, it’s just a matter of attitude. With just one gesture, you can change the perception of many of the things that happen in life.

The different designs of Anna Bonny are authentic wonders aesthetically speaking … Tell us a bit more about the design:

It was difficult because I do not come from the fashion world. I surrounded myself with friends who have great talent, along with Richard Capstick, Tatiana Almagro and Bendita Gloria we reached the results I wanted. I thought about doing what would be the “haute couture” of what we call “The Mastectomy Patch”. It is a new category of lingerie and I made them as best I could: British silk, Mokuba ribbons, cashmere, silk tulle …

«Symmetry should not be the only pattern of beauty … beauty exists in many other forms» We understand that this phrase is a denunciation of the social pressure that exists in women to «hide» that they have lost a breast in the battle of Cancer. How do you think the rest of us can act to stop this from happening?

Throughout a mastectomy, you often receive messages that always talk about “rebuild”, “disguise”, “replace”,  “not noticeable” … I think we have to change the debate, move from “how to replace it” to “why do it?” Lighten the weight instead of increasing it.
